What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual Property, or IP, encompasses the majority of what we write, draw, make or record and allows us to own ideas, inventions or creations in much the same way as we own any other type of property.

For example, it could be a new or improved device, leaflet, technique or piece of software.  Classifying an idea as property means that the owner can control how it is used and prevent others from stealing it.

It also means that your idea, once protected, can be brought to market for the benefit of you, your Trust, the NHS and its patients.

There are five main types of IP:

A single idea or invention could encompass one, several, or all of these types of IP.

It is important that you do not disclose your idea in any way until it is protected.  We can advise you on this.
