Gas Scavenger

The Problem

There is a recommended level of anaesthetic gas that can be released from a paediatric breathing circuit. Current systems are good at controlling the amounts of gas given to a child but there is a volume of gas wasted and expelled into the atmosphere. There are dangers associated with members of staff inhaling such gas and any measures to reduce this risk should be taken.

The Solution

Clinicians in the West Midlands, with the help of a professional designer, have invented an innovative series of gas circuits.  They work in the same manner as the currently available systems and still have the advantages of controlling administered gas, but can successfully scavenge the waste.  The system is a novel modification of current designs and uses the same materials, making the design simple and cheap to manufacture.

Opportunity

MidTECH is seeking a commercial partner with expertise in the manufacture and sale of similar devices.

Novel Proctoscope Design

The Problem

Haemorrhoids can be examined and treated using a proctoscope. The procedure is sometimes awkward with access and control of the device difficult.  There are many proctoscope designs on the market, many of which are difficult to use and relatively expensive.

The Solution

A clinician has created, with the assistance of MidTECH’s professional designer, a novel protoscope with an improved user experience.  It has a unique applicator and handle position for easy control, redesigned windows for easy access and a new end design for control of bodily waste through the device. It has progressed through various stages of design and prototype to fine-tune its features. The next stage is to test the device by a thorough, real-world clinical evaluation.

Opportunity

MidTECH is looking for commercial partners who have experience of developing and selling such devices. The invention would benefit from manufacturing and design expertise to turn the concept into a practical, mass-produced device.

Wheelchair assistive technologies

The Problem

With the increase in the ageing population, developments in wheelchairs and wheelchair assistive technology have been on the increase.  More wheelchairs are needed and there is a rise in demand for custom-built designs, add-ons and innovations that make living with a wheelchair more manageable.

Opportunities

MidTECH has a number of innovations from NHS Trusts in this area and is seeking commercial partners to help with the development and commercialisation of these. MidTECH is managing patents and designs in the following areas:

Wheelchair lifting and moving devices

One such device is a simplified system for the manual handling of a wheelchair to help with lifting and moving. The device is cheaper, less complicated and easier to store than currently available systems.  A patent has been filed for this invention.

Devices to help the user get in to and out of their wheelchair

Currently designers are working on the practical mechanics of a concept developed by a clinician to make it easier for a patient to get on to their wheelchair. The device has a unique and much needed application and is easily stored, cheap to make and simple to install.

Arm rehabilitation wheelchair accessory for hemiplegic patients

This accessory allows for the exercise, support and intelligent placement of a limb and looks to address some patients’ limb neglect. The device is an attachment to a wheelchair and has been designed to a high standard by industrial professionals. The concept came from clinicians in North Staffordshire who have day-to-day experience of patients’ needs and treatments.

Accurate patient measure for correct sizing of wheelchairs

This device accurately measures the patient for a custom built wheelchair. Accuracy is key here as an incorrectly sized chair can result in side and/or shoulder pain. The measure was designed, and a prototype used, by a Birmingham based clinician.
