MidTECH is an intellectual property (IP) and technology commercialisation management company, with a track record of guiding clients’ technologies through from concept to market. Starting from an initial idea we assess its feasibility and market potential, take appropriate steps to protect any IP, develop ‘proof of concept demonstrations’ and prototypes where appropriate, identify potential commercial partners and negotiate legal agreements – at all times keeping clients informed of progress, options and issues.
People create ideas all the time and Intellectual Property (IP) is the way we protect our ideas to prevent others from using or profiting from without permission. IP can be bought, sold, borrowed and lent in the same way as conventional property and is therefore an important and valuable asset for any organisation. The Intellectual Property Office defines IP as the “tangible expression of knowledge and creativity and encompasses the majority of what we write, draw, make or record.” For example, it could be a new technique, invention, device, leaflet or piece of software…
Intellectual Property can be classified into the following categories:

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) control how IP is used. The originator and owner of the IP are recorded (IP is often not owned by the inventor). The IP is protected, for example by patent or copyright, to ensure that the owner has sole right to use the idea. Permission for other parties to use it can be granted by licences; these can be given free or in return for royalties, although not all IP generates money. Alternatively, IP ownership can be transferred to another party in order for it to be developed and made available commercially to a wider market.
MidTECH provides a unique breadth of hands-on management, consultancy and advice on intellectual property management to both the public and private sectors. We cover every aspect of intellectual property (IP) management, including initial concept and market assessment, through to successful commercialisation. We also provide services that analyse your IP. This includes comparing your idea with similar technologies, estimating the value of your idea and using this information to help identify licensing or investment opportunities. For those relatively new to this field, or who wish to ensure there is a broader understanding within their company, we can also deliver a range of training and mentoring support…
Our expertise is delivered through a highly experienced and knowledgeable team of experts who have gained their experience in the commercial, public and academic sectors.

Dr Ian Baguley, Consultant Anaesthetist, Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust – inventor of the anaesthetic risk assessment tool“It was only looking back after engaging MidTECH’s help that I could appreciate that I had been jumping through hoops, alone and unguided, trying to develop something I must have passionately believed in without realising it. It was infinitely easier making progress with MidTECH as a partner, and with their help I began to realise that what I had been doing was called “innovation”. With MidTECH’s help, progress has not only been quicker but much less stressful. Thank you all at MidTECH.”
Bethan Bishop, Head of Research & Innovation, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust“Continued support from MidTECH is enabling us to deliver a key innovation development service across our Trust and to our commercial partners, who quite rightly demand rapid review and input into collaboration opportunities.”
Professor Warren Lenney, R&D Director, University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust“We were one of the founder members of MidTECH and prior to this our knowledge of the commercialisation and innovation outputs from research was negligible. We now have a number of patents and are continuing to work with MidTECH and value their services tremendously”
Angela Wright, Senior Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, North Staffordshire PCT – inventor of Let’s go to Languageland“I had not previously considered publishing this piece of work, however after being short-listed in their Innovation Competition, MidTECH provided this marvellous opportunity”
