TC Keight Walking Stick

19 May 2010

The Problem

Traditional walking sticks have a single fixed holding position intended for general support and walking use. Research conducted with stick users and clinical professionals suggested that there was an opportunity to develop a stick which provided a number of holding options. Traditional walking sticks don’t have the capacity to adapt to varying terrain and many stick designs force the user to hold the handle in a pre-determined position.

The Solution

This is an innovative solution from Sandwell PCT which provides the user with greater choice.

A unique ergonomic design provides three holding positions:

  1. Horizontal handle for flat terrain
  2. Resting handle also useful for low gradients
  3. For climbing up and down steps / steep gradients and a useful grip for getting up out of a seated position.

How MidTECH has helped

MidTECH registered the design to protect the PCT’s intellectual property and conducted negotiations with the commercial partner, TC Keight, on the PCT’s behalf, resulting in a licence agreement which will see the product brought to market for the benefit of patients across the country and a share of the revenue received by the PCT.
